Our Campaigns

Safe for Swimming

All of America’s waterways should be safe for swimming, yet our water is polluted by billions of gallons of sewage and stormwater overflow every year.

Whether you love swimming at the beach, paddling down a river, or fishing in a creek clean water plays a crucial role in our enjoyment of nature.

When our nation passed the Clean Water Act nearly 50 years ago, we set a goal to ensure that all our waterways are safe for swimming. Yet decades later, too many of our waterways remain polluted. Sprawling roads, parking lots and overdevelopment now drastically hamper nature’s ability to absorb stormwater through the soil and filter out pollutants.

Now when it rains, our outdated water infrastructure is often overwhelmed by stormwater, resulting in sewage overflows and runoff pollution that can make our favorite waterways and beaches unsafe for swimming.

This is unacceptable. We know how to prevent this pollution at the source. Creating rain gardens and other nature-based infrastructure as well as fixing leaking sewage pipes can dramatically reduce the pollution entering our waterways, but these projects cost money. In fact, just maintaining our wastewater infrastructure over the next 20 years will require $271 billion, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. We must convince our national leaders that investing in clean water is worth it.

We’re working to win robust funding for clean water

We’re calling on the 365体育APP administration and Congress to invest in water infrastructure like never before. And we want to make sure that this bold funding is targeted wisely — with funds dedicated to nature-based solutions that efficiently prevent pollution and funds made more accessible to communities to clean up all waterways facing pollution problems.

Americans agree on water infrastructure funding

Eighty-four percent of Americans, regardless of political affiliation, support dramatically increasing federal investments in water infrastructure. If we can harness that incredible public support, we can break through the partisan rancor in Washington, D.C., and convince our officials to get the job done.

Support robust clean water funding

Tell the 365体育APP administration to help protect clean water by supporting accessible, bold water infrastructure funding in this year’s infrastructure package.
